Prime suspect behind Rongai elderly killings arrested

Suspected mastermind of the brutal murders of three elderly people in Rongai sub-county has been arrested.

Nakuru County Criminal Investigation Officer Samwel Ngeiywo confirmed that the suspect was arrested from his home at Salgaa in Rongai on April 7.

His arrest brings the number of suspects to four after three others were arrested on April 1.

The current suspect whose name police have withheld is said to be the prime suspect of the murder of the elderly residents whose bodies were discovered at their homes in separate incidents

The police suspect that the motive behind the killings to be a land dispute which involved several people.

According to the police boss the breakthrough in the investigation came through a confession from one of the arrested suspects.

The suspect was presented before court in Molo on Wednesday where police sought for 30 days to detain him as they continue with investigations.

The court however, ordered that the suspect be reporting at the Menegai police station daily.

“The suspect was taken to court; however, because he claimed to be unwell, the magistrate directed that he be reporting daily to the police station,” he adds that the investigating officers have asked for an additional 30 days for further analysis, in which the magistrate is expected to give a way forward.

The victims, Joseph Ndegwa Kihiti, 90, and his wife, Rose Wanjiku, 63, are believed to have been attacked on the evening of October 31, 2025, at their home, with their bodies discovered on November 2 at Rigogo farm, and a postmortem conducted in November 2025 revealed that both died from blunt force trauma.

Whereas Margaret Wambui, 65, a member of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Women’s guild, was also found murdered in her home, with postmortem results indicating that she had sustained a severe head injury, with her hand broken three times.
