Nakuru assembly seeks public views on Livestock Sales Yard Bill
Nakuru county assembly building.
Livestock farmers and traders in Nakuru County have until Thursday, October 22, to submit their views on a proposed law governing livestock sales yards, ahead of a public hearing scheduled for the following day.
The County Assembly's Agriculture Committee will hold the hearing on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Assembly Auditorium, Ugatuzi Plaza Building, from 9:00 a.m. The session will allow members of the public and livestock sector stakeholders to present their views on the Nakuru County Livestock Sales Yard Bill, 2026.
Livestock sales yards provide a meeting point for farmers selling animals and traders looking for livestock. How these markets are managed can affect the conditions under which animals are sold, the organisation of trading activities and the interactions between sellers and buyers.
The proposed law seeks to establish a framework for the management and control of livestock sales yards in the county. However, the specific provisions of the 2026 Bill need to be examined to establish the requirements it would introduce for market operators, livestock traders and farmers.
An earlier version of the proposed legislation addressed issues including the licensing and management of sales yards, allocation of trading stalls, inspections, record keeping and animal welfare during transportation and handling. It remains necessary to confirm which of these provisions have been retained in the current Bill.
The public hearing comes as the legislation proceeds through the County Assembly after being read for the first time and referred to the Agriculture Committee for consideration, according to a notice issued by the Office of the Clerk to the Assembly.
Residents and stakeholders who wish to submit written memoranda can deliver them to the Clerk's office at the County Assembly, send the submissions by 5:00 p.m. on October 22.
The process is guided by Article 196(1) of the Constitution of Kenya, which requires county assemblies to facilitate public participation in their legislative and other business.
