KDF Officer accused of killing a man from Bahati released on bond
A senior military officer accused of beating a 74-year-old man to death on Christmas Day has been released on Sh500,000 bond.
High Court Judge Julius Nangea granted the bond to Senior Sergeant John Kimani Muturi yesterday after he denied killing Mr Morris Gachanja, a civilian.
The suspect, a Kenya Defence Forces officer based in Isiolo, allegedly killed Mr Gachanja at the Githioro police station canteen pub in Bahati, Nakuru County.
The two, who were having drinks at the canteen, are said to have had a disagreement before they got into a fight.
Sergeant Muturi allegedly jumped on the deceased, kicking and punching him in the head and face, seriously injuring him.
He was rushed to Nakuru Level Five Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
When he was arraigned in court on December 27, 2024, the police successfully applied for a seven-day remand to complete investigations and to accompany the suspect for a psychiatric evaluation.
While appearing in court the prosecutor, Emmah Okok, said the suspect had been found mentally fit to stand trial.
"The accused has no mental illness and is therefore fit to plead and stand trial," prosecutor Emmah Okok told the court.
Okok noted that the prosecution didn't object to the defendant being granted bail.
The court directed the prosecution to provide the defence with witness statements and other relevant documents for the case within three days.
The case will be continued on 21 February.
