On New Year’s Eve, Hosea Kariuki left with his younger brother to go to their church in Dundori, Subukia Sub County, to welcome the new year there.

At around 11pm, the younger brother came home running and wailing. The mother instantly woke up to see what was wrong. The words that came out of his mouth were a mother's worst nightmare.

“Mum, Hosea has been stabbed,” said the younger brother.

She instantly woke up and headed to where her younger son had directed her. Soon enough, she arrived at the scene and found her eldest son, 20-year-old Hosea, lying in a pool of blood with a stab wound to his stomach.

“We put him on a motorbike and rushed him to Dundori Dispensary,” she says, sobbing.

"Unfortunately, he had passed away by the time we arrived at the hospital," she says.

According to Wanjiku Macharia, her son found himself caught up in a scuffle that did not involve him.

“On their way to church, he came across two people fighting. He recognised one of them as a long-time friend of his. He decided to intervene, and in the process, the other individual stabbed him in the upper body," she says.

After the incident, the man who stabbed her son, ran away.

Lilies Wachira, the Bahati Sub County Police Commander, confirmed the incident and says that they had apprehended the suspect, who is now in custody.

“After the incident, the suspect fled to Njoro to stay with his uncle. He later surrendered at Njoro police station and is now in custody,” she says.
