Pain still lingers in the voice of Pasificah Kemunto as she recalls the night of October 12, when her husband, William Nyabera, 64, was brutally stabbed to death and left by the roadside.

“I had been asleep when I heard a commotion outside my gate, unaware that it was my neighbours delivering devastating news,” Kemunto says, explaining how she learnt of her husband’s murder.

She says she was told that her husband had been attacked by unknown assailants who stabbed him before escaping with his motorbike.

In the company of her neighbours, Kemunto rushed to the scene, barely a kilometre from their Kapsoton home in Nakuru West, where she was confronted with a sight that would haunt her memory forever.

Her husband was covered in a pool of blood and she could not tell if he was dead or alive.

“At the scene, his wallet and two mobile phones were intact, but the motorbike he had owned since 2015 was missing. Seeing him in that state, I could only pray that he survived his injuries,” she says.

Kemunto says with the help of police they rushed him to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, hoping for a miracle, but the doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

Unable to accept this fate, she rushed him to another hospital where doctors also gave the same verdict.

“I thought he would survive,” she says, her voice breaking.

Kemunto reveals that it was not an odd thing for her husband to come home late. In their 33 years of marriage, from time to time he would come in as late as midnight.

“That day he left home for church after we enjoyed breakfast together. When he failed to come home by 8 pm, I assumed it was his usual delay, never imagining that Sunday morning would be the last time I would see him alive,” she says , adding he was killed five minutes from their home.

The mother of three describes her husband as a good man, a loving husband, and a devoted father.

Nyabera had worked as a driver in the Ministry of Information since 1990 and was moved to the Ministry of Agriculture at Soilo where he worked for nine months before his retirement last year.

At their modest homestead, relatives and neighbours sit under a tent, as friends stream in to comfort the family.

His eldest son, Frankline Mogaka, describes his father as the pillar of the family.

“They not only stole his motorbike, they stole our peace and hope. Dad taught me to be honest, and to work hard. We are still in disbelief,” Mogaka notes.

Nakuru West Sub County Police Commander Stephen Kirui confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing.

He acknowledged a recent spike in insecurity cases in the area and assured residents that patrols have been increased as detectives pursue the suspects.

Kirui says that preliminary investigations established that Nyabera was stabbed in his stomach several times.

“We have increased patrols during the day and night, we noticed that crimes within Nakuru west normally occur within that particular place, measures have been taken. The matter is under investigation by the DCI officers. We are having leads towards that, very soon we will make some arrests after our investigations,” he says.
