12 demonstrators arrested during Thursday’s Gen Z protest anniversary released on cash bail
12 suspects charged in connection with June 25 protests in Nakuru
Twelve people arrested during Thursday's demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests were on Friday were released on Sh 5,000 cash bail each.
This was after they denied various charges including blocking the Nakuru Nairobi Highway and burning tyres within various spots in Nakuru town as well as participating in illegal protest.
The individuals were arrested in different parts of Nakuru Town during the demonstrations that saw heightened security deployment across the town.
The court granted the adult accused persons bond terms of Sh10,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh5,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Among those charged was James Mbugua, a 32-year-old man living wit a physical disability, and whose video of arrest has gone viral thus causing a public uproar.
Mbugua was manhandled during the arrest after the police pushed him to the ground, dragged him before bundling him onto a Landcruiser.
The inspector general of police has since ordered for investigations into the conduct of the police officers.
Also among those arrested is a 14-year-old minor who appeared before the court alongside the adult accused persons. The court ordered that the minor be released on a personal bond of Sh10,000 which was to be signed by his parents or guardian.
The prosecution requested time to furnish the defense with relevant evidence and witness statements ahead of the hearing.
The court directed all the accused persons to comply with the bond terms and scheduled the matter for mention on July 13, 2026.
