It’s all systems go for the 16th edition of the Prinsloo sevens tournament going down this weekend from the first to third of August at the Nakuru Athletics Club.

Ever since the first tournament that took place in 2007, the tournament has moulded Nakuru into a premium sporting hub. This weekend it will be opening its doors for the second leg of the National sevens circuit.

The first leg of the tournament was in Mombasa, where KCB rugby team carried the day.

Speaking during a press briefing, Prinsloo Sevens Tournament Director Edward Moseti says they are doing the final touches and come Friday they will hit the ground running with age grade rugby that has three categories, under 12 years, under 15 years and under 18.

“This year we are going to have the ladies’ teams playing over the weekend. So far in the ladies’ category we have 8 teams. In the men’s division one we will have 16 teams and in division two we will have 20 teams,” he says.

Moseti admits that due to the high number of games being showcased, the organisers will need to be very time conscious.

Additionally, a total of sh. 3 million has been given out by Kenya Breweries Limited through Tusker as sponsors of the event. This was confirmed by KBL brand ambassador Purity Wangari.

“From this sh. 1.5 million will go to the club itself and the other sh. 1.5 will go to the entertainment” Wangari adds.

Going into the tournament, all eyes will be on the hosts Nakuru RFC (Wanyore), who had an impressive run in the first leg of the tournament in Mombasa.

In the driftwood’s sevens, Wanyore managed to finish fourth after losing to Kabras Sugar in their third-place playoffs.

Moseti says that coming into their home turf, they are looking to improve their performance in the tournament.

Nakuru RFC concluded the 2024 season ranked 11th overall in the standings and this year.
