The wait is over!
The Sport Pesa National Sevens Circuit roars back into action this weekend, as all roads lead to Mombasa for the much-anticipated Driftwood 7s, the opening leg of the 2025 season known for its electric coastal vibe and competitive play.
Scheduled for July 26–27 at the Mombasa Sports Club, it ushers in a fresh chapter of high-octane rugby and Nakuru teams will be right at the heart of it.
Three teams from Nakuru; Menengai Oilers, Nakuru RFC, and Kabarak University will take to the pitch in Division One, aiming to build on their 2024 performances and make a strong early impression.
Kabarak University earned its promotion to Division One after a dominant 2024 season in Division Two.
Their consistent performances saw them finish top of the table with a 46-point lead, sealing a well-deserved step up.
Now in Pool D at Driftwood, Kabarak faces a stern challenge against Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, and Stallions Rugby. It’s their biggest test yet but one they’re expected to rise to.
The Menengai Oilers, known for their polished structure and aggressive breakdown play, are looking to better their fourth-place overall finish in 2024.
They ended the season with 83 points just five less of their 2023 tally. With experience and a refreshed squad, Driftwood 7s offers the perfect platform for a title charge.
Meanwhile, Nakuru RFC (Wanyore) will be eager to rewrite their story after a tough 2024 that saw them finish 10th.
Drawn in Pool B with Kabras Sugar RFC, Catholic Monks, and Impala RFC, this is a crucial chance to kick off their season with renewed purpose.
Last year, Nakuru RFC fought hard to avoid relegation. Now, with a clean slate and early rhythm, they’ll be hoping to turn the tide in their favor.
Driftwood Pools:
- Pool A: Kenya Harlequins (defending champs), MMUST, KU Blak Blad, Mwamba RFC
- Pool B: Kabras Sugar RFC, Catholic Monks, Nakuru RFC, Impala RFC
- Pool C: KCB RFC (2024 runners-up), Nondescripts RFC, Daystar Falcons, MSC Rugby (hosts)
- Pool D: Menengai Oilers, Strathmore Leos, Stallions Rugby, Kabarak University
With Nakuru teams spread across Pools B and D, fans will have multiple matches to follow. Every try, tackle, and turnover could shift the momentum of the entire circuit.
The 2025 season will test skill, endurance, and grit .But if 2024 proved anything, it’s that Nakuru’s rugby scene is one to watch.
All three teams will be looking forward to claiming a win from reigning Driftwood 7s champions Kenya Harlequin, setting the tone for what to be expected as they welcome the elite team home for Prinsloo 7s right after the coast challenge on August 2 and 3,2025 at the Sunguta Valley (Nakuru Athletics Club.)
This season the race is on, and the stakes are higher than ever.
