For die hard lovers of basketball Nakuru, the concern has been where they would go to be able to play the game they love.

Menengai High School basketball court has served this purpose since time immemorial, the fact that it is within a school set up is something that has always presented a huge challenge with regards to hosting events and accessibility by many of the people.

The conversation of having a basketball court in Nakuru intensified after the Nakuru County Women Basketball team emerged second in the Kenya Youth Inter-Counties Sports Association games(KYISA) that were held in Kilifi.

This moved the county sports department, which had initially budgeted for a basketball court, to fast track its efforts bringing to reality the first ever public court at the Kamukunji Grounds.

Speaking to David Kamau a veteran coach in Nakuru County, he notes that this will go a long way in ensuring the talent that has grown over the years has been nurtured.

"After the impressive performance by the basketball team in Kilifi the need to nurture this talent and come up with a public basketball court became a major priority" said coach Kamau.

He agrees that the issue of a public basketball court has been of great concern, therefore welcoming this court.

Speaking to the Deep Crater League (one of the local basketball leagues) Chairman, Fidel Ongolla, he also says that indeed this is a huge milestone for the sport in the county as for the first time it brings a new dynamic.

"With the Deep Crater League we try to empower the youth in a bid to promote the love of the game. The main problem has been the availability of a court, but now with the construction of this public court, it will help us advance even further with the local leagues and tournaments" he says.
