"They gave it their all’: Coach proud as Nakuru women’s rugby team takes fifth place

The curtains came down on the Prinsloo tournament last weekend, where we saw the massacre that was after Strathmore Leos left KCB rugby questioning whether they should be in rugby in the first place.
Some of the bankers’ fans were even saying, ama hawa watu ni waimbaji ni sisi tunawalazimisha kucheza rugby? All in all, a great time was had.
As for the Nakuru RFC women rugby team, the coach Moses Amuko, says his team performed fairly well.
“Coming into this tournament we were very anxious. For most of the women it was their first time playing in such matches with a large audience. However, their confidence was high throughout the tournament”, he says.
The coach adds that the team finished in 5th position out of all the 8 teams that were present.
“Remember, most of the players are in high school whom we drew from our age grade rugby squad and therefore managing to show up and compete in this level was very admirable. The most important thing is that we had a game plan and they stuck to it. We managed to win our game against Northern Suburbs and we lost the rest of the games against Mwamba RFC, and National Youth Service (NYS),” he says.
According to the coach, Tracy Abigail was the most outstanding player of the tournament saying that her tactical awareness and pace helped the team make most of their tries.
“We are using the Prinsloo tournament as a learning curve as we head into the other legs of the National Seven Circuit. We have a fortnight to train and fine tune our mistakes before we head for the Christies 7s which will be in Nairobi,” he notes.
Amuko reveals that at Prinsloo the team played without two top players who went to the National team. These are Grace Okulu and Freshia Awino and he hopes they will join the team in the next match.
He concludes by saying that he is grateful for the platform the women have been given in the tournament adding that it will open the doors for many of the young players in his team.
