The Prinsloo Sevens will host the first leg of this year's National Sevens Circuit in the women's category. Eight teams will compete in the women's category for the coveted Prinsloo Sevens championship title.
The Nakuru RFC women's team will have the full support of the home fans, who are anticipating that the team will win the trophy.
According to Moses Amuko, coach of the Nakuru RFC women's team, the team has undergone rigorous training in preparation for this tournament.
"I am new to the team, but I can say that we are well prepared," he says. "Most of the players in our team for the tournament were picked from different high schools around Nakuru. Most of those who were in the team previously have left to focus on other things,” Amuko says.
Last season, the team competed in two tournaments: the Kabeberi 7s and the Prinsloo 7s.
“During the Kabeberi 7s tournament, we came fourth, and at the Prinsloo 7s, we came third. Overall, we were ranked third at the end of the circuit,” he says.
Amuko says that they hope to better this performance in this year's circuit.
“This is a young team, so spectators should expect to see a lot of new faces as we head into the tournament. However, their energy levels and knowledge of the game are off the charts, and they are more than equal to the task at hand,” he notes.
Pool A consists of Mwamba, Northern Suburbs and National Youth Service.
The teams are highly competitive, and Amuko admits that he is worried about going into the tournament without some key players on whom he relied heavily.
“Grace Okulu and Freshia Awino were two of my key players who were called up to the national team. They are experienced and I was counting on them to help guide the team. However, that will not be possible,” he says.
The Prinsloo tournament will take place from 1 to 2 August at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
