MC Willy: From humble beginnings to Nakuru's top hype man

William Kigen, popularly known to his fans as MC Willy, needs no introduction in Nakuru.

His illustrious career in the entertainment industry has earned him a reputation as the ultimate hype man.

Willy started out as a dancer, performing with a gospel dance crew at various events. His interest in becoming an MC was sparked during a performance in Nairobi when he saw a hype man in action. 

"My passion for entertainment, dance and making people happy led me into this craft. I knew immediately that this was what I wanted to do," he recalls.  

Five years ago, he officially started hyping events, honing his skills through hands-on experience. His breakthrough came when the Groove Awards held a tour in Nakuru. 

Seizing the moment, he applied to hype the crowd, marking a turning point in his career.  

"I was given the opportunity and I had seven minutes of hyping and I was so excited. That was the stamp of approval for my MCeeing and hyping talent," he says. 

To master the art, Willy worked with various deejays in Nakuru, dedicating an entire year to unpaid practice. His efforts paid off when DJ Moh, a key figure in the industry, gave him a platform to showcase his talent in Nairobi. 

"DJ Moh allowed me to hype during his sets, which helped me network with other hype men and sharpen my skills," he says.  

His first paid gig was at a school function where he earned Sh20,000. This was prove that his hard work was beginning to bear fruit. 

"The response, praise and feedback from the audience motivated me to fully embrace my identity as a hype man," he says.

As a dedicated gospel hype man, he has turned down numerous offers for secular events, including a lucrative Sh450,000 contract for an alcoholic beverage event. 

"It was tempting, but it wasn't in line with my values. I'm glad I got more work afterwards, I didn't feel like a loser," he says.  

Willy emphasises the need for greater awareness about the hype industry in Nakuru, and urges brands to recognise the value of hype men in growing their platforms and businesses. 

"Awareness of the hype industry isn't as high as it should be. Brands should know that they basically need the services of hype men to grow their platforms and businesses," he notes. 

To support aspiring hype men, he has set up an events company focused on mentorship and industry growth. 

Over the years, he has hyped major events such as Oldies and Soul Sunday School and EDGE Events, cementing his presence in the entertainment scene.
