Nakuru's entertainment scene is finding new rhythm as salsa socials create space for dance enthusiasts, first-timers and music lovers to connect, learn and unwind beyond the town’s conventional nightlife offerings.
Through the social, the growing salsa community is introducing a different kind of social experience where music, movement and human connection take center stage. Unlike entertainment spaces that primarily revolve around drinks and live music performances, the socials offer participants an opportunity to get on the dance floor, learn new moves and interact with people from different backgrounds.
For first-timer Ashley Omoga, attending Bennito’s Salsa Social was an opportunity to step outside her usual routine and experience something different.
“Honestly, I just wanted to try something new, enjoy some good music and have a good time. Bennito’s Social caught my attention, and I thought, why not?” she says.
Although it was her first time attending the event, Ashley, who has always enjoyed music and dancing, found the experience welcoming and enjoyable. She was particularly impressed by how dance brought people from different social backgrounds together, creating an atmosphere where everyone could enjoy themselves.
Beyond the music and dancing, she appreciates the opportunity to watch experienced dancers, enjoy the atmosphere and simply be part of a new social experience.
Having enjoyed her first visit, Ashley says she would gladly attend another edition, noting that the energy, music and people made the experience worthwhile.
For regular attendee Janet Nyambura, the appeal of salsa socials goes beyond entertainment. She says the gatherings provide an opportunity to express herself through dance while meeting new people and developing her skills.
“I attend salsa socials because I love the energy, the music and the freedom of expressing myself through dance. I also enjoy meeting new people, learning new moves and connecting with different people through a shared passion for dance,” she says.

Having attended four salsa socials so far, Nyambura is looking forward to more editions, demonstrating how the gatherings are gradually building a community of people who share an interest in dance and social interaction.
According to Bennito, the curator of the socials, the idea emerged from demand among students attending his salsa and kizomba classes. After completing their lessons, students wanted a space where they could practise what they had learnt, showcase their skills and gain experience by dancing with others.
The socials therefore provide an opportunity for learners to move beyond the classroom and develop confidence on the dance floor. At the same time, experienced dancers can interact with beginners, exchange techniques and help create an environment where people continue learning outside formal classes.
Bennito intends to hold the socials once a month, on the second Wednesday of every month, giving participants a regular opportunity to practice, socialise and remain connected to the dance community.
