A man accused of violently robbing someone in Nakuru West has been charged with robbery before a Nakuru court.
Joshua Wanjala, also known as Waingo, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Priscah Nyotah on October 6, where he denied the charges.
According to court documents, on October 1 at around 1pm, Wanjala and others, who are not before the court, allegedly attacked and robbed Erick Monyancha in the Menya Ciaku area of Nakuru West Sub-county.
It is alleged that the accused stole Monyancha’s mobile phone, spectacles, a black bag and a hat.
The incident came to light after a video of the assault was circulated on social media, showing a man being beaten and attacked by a group of people. The victim was later identified as Monyancha.
The disturbing footage sparked public outrage in Kaptembwo and the wider Nakuru Town West area, prompting angry residents to storm the police station in Kaptembwo, demanding justice for the victim.
Police later arrested Wanjala, who was taken into custody at the station. In court, Wanjala pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence.
Magistrate Nyotah granted the accused bail of Sh300,000 with one surety of a similar amount, or cash bail of Sh120,000. Two contact persons were also required to sign guarantees of Sh150,000 each.
