Biz Lounge: "Despite the misconceptions about waxing, I've still been able to run a successful spa business"

Starting Blissful Whispers Wellness and Spa just made sense to Eddah Wanjiru Wamuti. After working in the beauty industry for six years as a hired hand, she decided to quit employment and bet on herself.

It would be the first of many decisions that would lead her towards her dreams, some of which have come true and some of which haven't. Her only wish is if she had started earlier.

Here is her inspiring story.

Before Blissful Whispers Wellness and Spa, I ran a salon in Kericho where I had to go back to beauty school to upgrade my skills as I only had a degree in purchasing and delivery.

The business was successful for five years until it collapsed and I decided to move to Nakuru. Here I took a six-month break before deciding on my next business venture.

After the break in 2022, I decided to do what I knew best and ventured into a spa business offering spa services, starting with just one bed and the products needed. I'm so glad I did. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

When I started the business in Nakuru, it was hard to convince my clients that I could offer better services here and that they didn't need to travel to Nairobi.

Convincing newcomers has always been a challenge, especially with all the misconceptions about waxing and massage.

We encourage them to start with armpit waxing before going for a Brazilian wax. I make most of the products we use in the spa myself, so the clients get the best and don't have to worry about inferior products.

I started the business by myself and broke even within six months. The business has grown to five employees.

We get about 50 clients a week and charge between Sh2,100 and Sh10,000 depending on the service.

Being part of this industry means I get to enable women to feel like the best version of themselves, which is so empowering.
From armpits to Brazilians, we do it all, we just believe that if you're already shaving or trimming, you should change it and try waxing instead.

Beauty isn't just in our eyes. But looking and feeling like ourselves on the outside can help us feel so much better on the inside.
