Four suspected Kidnappers will have to remain in police custody for seven days to allow the police time to conclude investigations.

The suspects namely Simon Philip Amaya, Elijah Chege, John Mungai Mbao and Faith Mwende were arrested on Wednesday at an AirBnB in Ruiru, Kiambu county by detectives from Nakuru and Nairobi who were tracing the whereabouts of a fourth year Egerton University Student Daisy Chebet Barno.

Nakuru Principal magistrate Yvone Khatambi directed that the four be detained at the Kaptembwo Police station for a period of one week in order to give the police time to conclude their investigations.

In a miscellaneous application filed before court by Sergeant Collins Opiyo, the court heard that the detectives were investigating a case of kidnapping and conspiracy to commit a felony against the suspects

Mr Opiyo said the detectives from Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau managed to rescue Ms Chebet from the hands of the suspects on the night of January 30.

Ms Chebet’s parents had reported that the kidnappers who had taken hostage of their daughter had demanded Sh 600,000 in exchange for her freedom.

Mr Opiyo sought to have detention of the suspects who he said are flight risk and capable of absconding court date.

The police further claimed that the suspects’ lives were in danger since the members of the public were baying for their blood following the incident.

The court heard that the police were yet to record statements from the crucial witness as well get MPesa statements of the suspects accounts.

“It is necessary and desirable that the respondent who is also the suspect in the ongoing investigations is hereby ordered to remain in custody at Kaptembwo police station for a period of seven days,” ruled Ms Khatambi.
