You know that feeling you get when you have a deal you have been praying for and waiting for so patiently finally goes through?

Well, that was the feeling yesterday among MCAs at the Nakuru County Assembly after Alex Langat was removed as the Majority leader and replaced with William Mutai.

The Members of County Assembly (MCA) were overjoyed, with some members even describing it as an end to a tyrannical rule.

There were cheers and celebrations from the MCAs as they congratulated the new leader of majority at Ugatuzi Plaza.

Stanley Karanja, MCA, Naivasha East Ward says the removal of Alex Langat was inevitable, seeing how he had conducted himself in the last two years.

“We had a majority leader who did not understand his role and as members we felt exposed and helpless. Now with this change, the County Assembly has received a rebirth” he says.

He adds that there were many instances where the former majority leader failed to delegate his duties, citing how motions and petitions brought forth in the house would always be pushed aside by him.

Rose Gathoni Njoroge, MCA Gilgil ward, describes the rule of the former majority leader as “a one-man show”

“I am the deputy majority leader. However, there was never any consultation between him and the other members. We expect that to change with the incoming majority leader,” she says.

William Mutai, the new majority leader appreciated his new role, promising a difference in his leadership.

“We highlighted time and time again the issue of corruption in the County, including the latest issue pertaining to procurement of sport equipment and kits. Whenever we made efforts to seek accountability on this matter and many more, our efforts were impeded therefore making it hard for us to carry out our function of oversight” he says.

He however says that now that he is at the helm of the leadership, things will change for the better.

The majority leader says, “I will always ensure that I listen to my colleagues and I will make sure I consult wherever I am not sure. I will also be talking and explaining to the Governor the issues as they are without fear or favour”

31 out of the 55 members of County Assembly voted to oust Langat Alex in favour of William Mutai.
