What transpired at the county assembly regarding afraha annex saga

Students from school use the path on the Afraha Annex to get home.
The county assembly through the committee on Lands Housing and Physical Planning has questioned plans to use Afraha annex land for affordable housing units.
Mtaa Wangu has learnt that the matter was tabled on July 30 after being raised by Lare MCA Philip Wanjohi.
At the time, the Lare representative sought a report from the chairperson Peter Palang’a regarding the status and use of the annex grounds for affordable housing.
“Afraha stadium is the pride of Nakuru and used by all across the county. The annex field has served as a training ground and is a critical part of county sports infrastructure.”
Mr Wanjohi added, “Any intention to repossess land meant for youth development and nurturing talent has to be done transparently. With full stakeholder engagement and planning,” he notes.
The lawmaker wanted the chairperson to find out the current ownership and zoning of Afraha annex field.
Mr Wanjohi also questioned whether there are plans to convert the land to affordable housing as well as the role of the county executive and state department of housing in the said plan.
Lastly he put the committee to task in explaining if there was any public participation that was conducted regarding the change of use on the parcel of land.
The Deputy Speaker, Anthony Kamau ordered the committee on Lands Housing and Physical Planning to liaise with the department of Lands Housing and Physical Planning and give a report after 21 days.
Now that the 21 days have lapsed, Palang’a says the committee is yet to write the report since the house had gone on recess. He however states that they had already done their preliminary investigations into the matter.
“We summoned both the County Executive of lands, John Kihagi and the Nakuru County Secretary Samuel Mwaura who confirmed to us that there are no plans to convert Afraha Annex to affordable housing and it will remain as is,” he states.
These speculations started after the Nakuru County Government posted information on their official Facebook page of plans to build affordable housing on the parcel of land. The county later deleted the post and said it was erroneous.
This raised concerns among the sports fraternity. They escalated the matter to the Nakuru County Assembly where through a petition, they urged the legislators to look into the matter.
