Pool table is one of the sports that is perceived to be gender specific as it is associated more with men than women.

However, there are women who enjoy playing the game despite the perception around it.

According to residents who spoke to Mtaa Wangu, their perception of women playing the sport is shaped by the environment within which the sport takes place.

Moses Ngotho, an electrical engineer believes that women who play pool risk being sexually harassed by the men who form the majority of players and fans.

“Men are likely to take advantage of the women at the pool table because they are the majority. I do not think a married woman should even go near the pool table,” said Mr Ngotho.

Sammy Nderitu who is a mechanic shared a similar opinion, adding that women who play pool go there with the intention of seducing men.

“Women should not be playing pool table games because they end up losing their respect to the community who view them as immoral,” said Mr Nderitu.

Sheila Nekesa, a student at Laikipia University, has no problem with women playing pool.

She argues that it is a better indoor sport to play especially during leisure time. She explains that there are other decent places where players are civilized and the safety of the women is guaranteed.

Melody Kasity said she can play the pool table irrespective of whether the majority of participants are men or women.

“The sport is for everyone and provided the environment is safe anybody is free to participate,” said Ms Kasity.

Brian Omondi a businessman in Nakuru is not opposed to the idea of women playing pool, but adds that the woman must be accompanied by a male counterpart.

" If she is my girlfriend, I would always accompany her so that I ensure she is safe from harassment by men," he said.
