Utumishi Girls’ student survives inferno but loses parent to road accident

A parent to student at Utumishi Girls in Gilgil died in a road accident along the Nakuru-Gilgil highway on their way to the school.

Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander, Winstone Mwakio that the deceased, was a parent to a form four student at the school who was rushing to the school following the news of a deadly fire incident.

According to the police, their private vehicle collided head-on with a lorry at Kariandusi area in Gilgil at around 3 am on Thursday.

"The truck from Nairobi to Nakuru was overtaking carelessly which hit the Prado which was headed to Gilgil," said Mwakio.

He also confirmed that the woman was accompanied by her husband who sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted at St Mary's Hospital.

The woman’s body was transferred to the Gilgil sub-county morgue for preservation.

The accident follows an early morning fire accident that claimed the lives of 16 students and injured 79 others at Utumishi Girls senior school.

In the accident 69 students were admitted to the St. Joseph RiftValley Hospital where seven students were airlifted to KU and KNH hospitals confirmed Dr. Collins Malalu, a Resident Medical Officer while 61 were discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries while one discharged at the parent's request.
