Two people have died in a tragic road accident involving multiple vehicles at Sachangwan along the Nakuru Eldoret highway.
The accident, which involved five vehicles, occurred early Wednesday morning along the deadly Salgaa – Sachangwan black spot.
The lorry driver died on the spot, while another man succumbed to injuries before reaching hospital.

Speaking to Mtaa Wangu, Nakuru County Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Ogolla says the lorry, which was heading towards Nakuru, lost control after developing a mechanical problem and rammed into more than four vehicles travelling in the same direction.
“This accident involved five vehicles and appears to have been caused by a mechanical failure. Several passengers were injured and taken to different hospitals. We are still confirming the number of casualties,” Ogolla says.
Residents and first responders from Salgaa were among the first to arrive at the scene. Red Cross coordinator Rachel Maru says she received a distress call reporting an accident along the highway and immediately rushed to Sachangwan.
“When I got here, I found two Nissan vehicles and three lorries involved. Many people were injured and there was panic,” says Maru.

She notes most of the injured were rushed to Highway Hospital, while others were taken to Coptic Hospital and PGH Hospital, with support from ambulances sent by the Nakuru County government.
“We thank the hospitals and the county government for responding quickly. Without the ambulances, the situation would have been worse,” she says.
Another responder, Alex Talam, explains the efforts they put to try and respond to the injured at the scene.
“The two men were supposed to be taken to hospital, but they died before we could move them. We send our condolences to their families,” says Talam.

He notes that some victims were initially assisted by good Samaritans using private vehicles before government ambulances arrived.
“All the injured were taken to hospitals within Nakuru County, including Molo and Nakuru PGH. This stretch continues to claim lives, and we appeal to the government to strengthen emergency response and road safety measures in Salgaa ,” Talam concludes.
In a statement released on December 24, The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised alarm over a spike in fatal road crashes reported across several counties during the festive season, including Nakuru, Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Kiambu, Nyeri, Bungoma and Narok.
NTSA confirmed that on December 23 alone, 16 road crashes were recorded nationwide, resulting in the loss of 25 lives.

The authority expressed condolences to bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery, reiterating that road safety remains a top national priority during the busy holiday travel period.
Providing a breakdown of the fatalities, NTSA stated: “Most of the victims were pedestrians (8), passengers (8), followed by motorcyclists (5), pillion passengers (3) and one driver.”
In response to the rising fatalities, NTSA has intensified multi-agency enforcement operations across the country.
