Two Egerton university students were on Monday charged with online harassment of a Nakuru mental health expert.

Ms Ambrose Esther and Elizabeth Mokua are alleged to have harassed Joseph Mwenja alias Iregi through their social media posts.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’, the two are said to have wilfully posted a message on their X (formerly Twitter) handles, directly and indirectly with others, knowing that the message will cause injury to the character of Mr Mwenja.

In the message posted on July 27, 2023, the students accused Mr Mwenja of perpetuating cruelty towards a young girl.

The message purported to criticize Mr Iregi acting contrary to the expectations of a person of his calibre.

The students however denied the charges and requested to be admitted to favourable bond terms.

Through their lawyer, the suspects urged the court to admit them to the terms similar to the one they were given at the Nakuru central police station.

The court heard that the police had released the girls on a Sh 20,000 cash bail, pending investigations.

The lawyer argued that the ladies are not a flight risk since they have never failed to appear at the police station since they were admitted to bond on October 11.

The prosecution did not oppose the bond but requested the court to allow the Police detain them at the station for a day in order for the police to take their fingerprints.

The court granted the request by the prosecution and directed that the girls be remanded at the Nakuru Central Police station.

The case was reported on July 27, 2023 before the police launched investigations that led to the suspects’ arrest.
