TVET students send passionate plea to President Ruto
The TVETs Students Association are up in arms over the decision by the government to increase their school fees from Sh 54,420 to Sh 67 ,189.
The students through Daniel Kiptanui the President of the association said that the school fee was increased without the students and parents being consulted.
“The high cost of living has affected everyone in the country and we are no different. Our parents are suffering even as the fees stand at over Sh 50,000 because for some it is a huge burden to them. Increasing it would not make any sense,” he said.
Kiptanui continued to say that the students were aggrieved since President William Ruto had earlier stated that he would not increase the fees.
“The state department should not take our silence as cowardice. It was the State Department of Vocational and Technical Training that decided to increase the school fees and we want to urge them to reconsider their decision,” he stated.
The student leader further pleaded with President Ruto to intervene in the matter and help save them from the burden put on them and their parents by extension.
The students have drafted and issued a statement to the ministry that has outlined their concerns with the issue at hand.
“We have submitted a statement to the ministry and if they won’t listen to us we will go to court or even seek other means such as peaceful protests,” Kiptanui added.
The new funding structure announced by the government early this year has continued to spark a debate among students in tertiary institutions who want the previous fee structure to be maintained.
