Susan Kihika Absence: Why Nakuru resident wrote letter to Trump

Eng. Evans Kimori addressing the media on February 5, 2025.
Nakuru resident Engineer Evan Kimori has now turned to United States President Donald Trump to intervene in the matter regarding the prolonged absence of Governor Susan Kihika.
In a letter addressed to the President, Eng. Kimori states that the Governor has allegedly been seeking maternity and new-born medical attention in the USA, way past the maternity leave period prescribed in law.
“While maternity leave is recognized under Kenyan law for up to 90 days, she has been absent for nearly five months, creating a leadership vacuum in Nakuru County,” reads part of the letter.
Speaking to Mtaa Wangu, Eng. Kimori says he escalated the matter since he felt the county assembly was not treating it with the seriousness it deserves.
“We would like the American authorities to communicate with us about the status of the Governor, who is an elected leader in Kenya,” he says.
He also stated that the main reason for this action was to seek accountability, as the residents of Nakuru have a right to know where their leader is, given that there are matters of county importance that require the Governor’s attention.
Additionally, “As much as there are other appointed leaders, she is the Governor of Nakuru, and the buck stops with her.”
Earlier last week, Nakuru residents petitioned the Nakuru County Assembly, expressing concern over the prolonged absence of Governor Susan Kihika.
The petitioner, Eng. Kimori, noted that Nakuru County is facing a crisis that requires decisive leadership.
“In our list of demands, we wanted the County Assembly of Nakuru to summon the Governor or her representatives to publicly disclose where she has been and why she has repeatedly missed crucial events without giving an excuse,” he says.
In conclusion, he demanded that the County Assembly provide feedback within 14 days on the steps taken regarding the petition.
