“My life is in danger!” These were the sentiments of Brian Silweyz, a spoken word artist after receiving numerous threats from unknown people.

In an exclusive interview with Mtaa Wangu, Silweyz says that he started receiving these threats on Thursday through phone calls from a number he did not know.

“I received a call on Thursday. There were a group of people on the other end who were hurling insults at me and calling me all sorts of names. They then started saying that I should stop doing these spoken word poems,” he says.

The spoken word artist says the people afterwards asked for sh.20,000, as a protection fee.

“I refused to heed to their demands and they started saying that they know where I live even mentioning the estate,” he adds.

Fearing for his life, Silweyz reported the matter at Railways Police Station on Monday 22nd July as seen in the OB number OB.36/22/07/2024.

“From Thursday all through to Sunday, they kept flashing my phone and sometimes whenever I could pick the call, no one would speak on the other end.”

Additionally, Silweyz says that the police told him they have forwarded the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who will commence investigations.

“Indeed, I feel threatened, especially since these unknown people know where I stay. I am living in constant fear and considering I am an artist who is always up and about I do not feel safe while walking these streets in Nakuru. I constantly have to keep looking over my shoulder,” he notes.

Silweyz is a performing spoken word artist based in a Nakuru. His poetry takes a bold approach addressing issues around poor governance and corruption.

In September last year, Silweyz was allegedly assaulted by six police officers for having dreadlocks.
