Two sisters from Nessuit location, Njoro sub-county drowned this morning while trying to cross Ndarugu River as they were going to the farm.

The girls, identified as Faith Cheptoo, 17, and Sharon Chepng'etich, 15, fell into the ravaging waters while crossing the river by stepping on the rocks which is a shortcut rather than using the bridge.

This was revealed by the Chief Nessuit Location Douglas Muna who said that the two girls were in company of another girl who had already crossed the river.

"Chepng'etich drowned first and that's when Cheptoo went to help her but they were overwhelmed by the water," he says.

Chief Muna notes that the bodies of the two girls are yet to be recovered adding that four local divers are working tirelessly to recover the bodies.

Njoro OCPD, Paul Wambugu confirmed the incident telling Mtaa Wangu that the two girls are suspected to have drowned as they tried to cross the river using the open rocks lined up across the river.

He added that the recovery efforts will continue until the bodies are found.

Mr Wambugu further called upon the residents to exercise caution and avoid crossing swollen rivers.

Mtaa Wangu could not immediately reach the parents as they were still in shock owing to the sad news.
