A pupil has died while 14 others are nursing injuries after strong winds blew off the roof of St Pascal Academy yesterday afternoon, trapping learners aged between 3 and 15 years under debris.

The Medical Superintendent of the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, Dr James Waweru, confirms the facility received 14 students at the casualty department following the incident on January 16.

"Two students were admitted to the hospital for further treatment and observation," Dr. Waweru says, adding that one female student remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while another patient is currently admitted to the orthopedic ward.

Tragically, he confirms that one girl succumbed to her injuries.

"The remaining students presented with minor injuries and were treated and discharged," Dr. Waweru adds.

He says the girl in the general ward is expected to be discharged tomorrow but notes he cannot give a clear assessment of the students in the ICU as of now.

"Her condition continues to be monitored closely," he says.

According to residents the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. yesterday at St Pascal Academy in Mzee wa Nyama area when powerful winds ripped the roof off the school building affecting students between the ages of 3 and 15 years who were inside at the time.

The sudden collapse of the roofing structure resulted in multiple casualties, with debris falling on the young learners. Emergency response teams quickly mobilized to rescue trapped students and transport the injured to Nakuru Level Five Hospital.
