Police officer shoots pub owner, then turns gun on himself in Naivasha

At around 7:30 pm on January 1, 2026, gunshots were heard coming from Lucy’s Pub in Naivasha Sub-County. This instantly attracted the attention of people in the area, who responded to the incident. Upon arrival, they found two bodies lying in pools of blood.
The authorities were soon notified and arrived at the scene. According to a police report, the incident involved a police officer and the pub's owner, Lucy Wanjiru.
Corporal Collins Kochei, who is attached to the Tangi Tano police post in Gilgil sub-county, found his way to the pub in Naivasha. At the time, he was armed with an AK-47 rifle. There, he shot Lucy, injuring her, and then shot himself in the head.
“They were both rushed to Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital. The police officer was pronounced dead on arrival, while Lucy was taken in for medical treatment,” the report stated.
Speaking to the medical superintendent at NCTRH, James Waweru, the two were brought to the hospital late at night in bad condition however the woman is currently stable.
“She sustained injuries to her hands, legs, and ribs. We are closely monitoring her, and she is currently stable,” Mr Waweru says.
The reason why Collins shot Lucy in cold blood is still under investigation, according to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru.
