Police have launched a manhunt for suspects who attacked and robbed a police officer of his firearm near the Ngata police post in the London ward of Rongai sub-county on the morning of October 28.

According to Donata Otieno, the Rongai Sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO), the officer sustained serious head injuries during the assault and is currently receiving treatment in hospital in Nakuru town.

"The incident occurred just a few metres from the police station," Ms Otieno says, confirming that the officer had been ambushed while responding to what appeared to be a vehicle breakdown.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the officer had approached three men standing beside a vehicle near the station’s entrance. The suspects, who seemed to be fixing the car, allegedly turned on the officer, hit him on the forehead and stole his firearm.

"The attackers then sped off in the same vehicle they had claimed had broken down, leaving the officer unconscious by the roadside," Ms Otieno says.

After regaining consciousness, the injured officer reportedly staggered back to the police station, where his colleagues administered first aid before taking him to hospital.

Ms Otieno added that the officer is still unable to recall the full details of the incident.

“He’s not certain whether he lost consciousness purely from the impact of the blow or if he was drugged,” she explains.

Detectives have since launched a full-scale operation to track down the suspects and recover the stolen firearm.

“We appeal to members of the public who may have seen or heard anything to share information that may help us recover the weapon and arrest the culprits,” Ms Otieno says.

The incident raises fresh security concerns in the area given that it took place outside the police station.
