Phone data links husband to M-pesa agent's murder, Nakuru court told

Zacharia Karanja appearing in Nakuru court on June 3,2025.
Shocking details have revealed that the mobile phone belonging to the Mpesa attendant who was found dead after going missing was located at the same location with her husband.
Police in their investigations had established that Ms Hannah Waithera’s phone was at the location where her husband Zachary Wambugu was, on March 31 at around 0200 hours.
Corporal Richard Kipsang, the detective attached to the Directorate of Criminal investigations office in Nakuru told the court that they traced Ms Waithera’s number and discovered that it was at the same place where Mr Wambugu’s cell phone number was.
Mr Kipsang made the allegation while submitting an application the Police filed before court seeking to detain Mr Zachary for 21 days in order to conclude their investigations.
“When we tracked the woman’s mobile phone it showed that the number was at the same location to where the suspect was. When questioned he claimed he had a friend who had tracked the line and located it in Kijabe moving towards Nairobi direction,” said Mr Kipsang.
Mr Wambugu is alleged to have been at the central police police station where he had gone to report of a missing person two hours after she had been reported.
“We became suspicious of him when he went to report the case of a missing person only two hours after the girl went missing. The Police refused to book the report on the Occurrence book because it was early and advised him to wait until the following day,” said Mr Kipsang.
The suspicions made the police to detain him for the murder of his wife.
Ms Waithera’s decomposing body was discovered dumped at Technology farm a week after she was reported missing from her workplace within Nakuru town on May 21.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet, the detective said the police needed to have the witness record statements, carry out the forensic analysis of the DNA samples as well as retrieve CCTV footage from the neighbours.
The police further want to take the mobile phones for forensic analysis.
The suspect however, through his lawyer opposed the application claiming it was violating his constitutional right to freedom on bond.
Mr Wambugu claimed he had been cooperating with the police since the time his wife went missing and it was unfair for them to accuse him of having a role in her death
The magistrate will make a ruling on the application Wednesday.
