Nakuru Mtaa Wangu’s journalist Bret Sanya was feted in last night’s Nakuru Journalist Association Gala for being the Best Digital Journalist in the year 2025.

The documentary, Giza Ziwani: Nakuru’s Deadly Fish Hunt, was also recognised as the best in its category.
It highlighted the plight of families who have never been able to trace their loved ones after they went fishing in the treacherous waters of Lake Nakuru National Park.

This story was reported at a time when Brian Odhiambo, a young man last seen in the custody of Kenya Wildlife Rangers, had mysteriously disappeared.

This matter evoked public interest, leading to protests in Kivumbini, numerous court proceedings and interventions from the Cabinet Secretary. Currently, six KWS officers are standing trial over the matter.

The night was glamorous, with everyone dressing to impress.

The event celebrated excellence in journalism and honoured individuals who continue to have a significant impact in Nakuru County and beyond.

Nation Media Group’s Ruth Sarmwei Chesenge won both the Journalist of the Year and the Governance Reporting awards.

Joseph Kipsang was celebrated as the Best Photographer, while Suleiman Mbatia received the Conservation Award.

Anaeli Mlinga won the Climate Change and Energy Reporting award.

The guest of honour, Governor Susan Kihika, was represented by her deputy, David Kones. In a speech delivered on her behalf, the Governor thanked the journalists of Nakuru for their tireless efforts and dedication to their work.
