Langalanga Mixed Senior School principal, Rufina Mutegi, has been transferred to Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, where she is expected to take over the leadership of the institution following its reopening after a month-long closure.

She will be taking over from Ms Joycelene Muraguri

Confirming the transfer, Nakuru County Director of Education Victoria Mulili said Mutegi reported to her new station last week and will officially assume her duties once the school resumes learning.

Mulili noted that parents had already been briefed on the leadership changes during a meeting held ahead of the reopening. Mutegi takes over the institution as it begins a new chapter following one of the worst school tragedies in recent years.

Utumishi Girls School will reopen in phases starting Tuesday, June 30, marking the return of learners one month after a devastating dormitory fire claimed the lives of 16 students.

According to a notice issued by the school administration, Form Four, Grade 10 and Form Three learners will report first under a phased reopening programme. The school was closed on May 28 after a fire broke out on the night of May 27, destroying the Meline Waithera Block dormitory, which accommodated 220 students.

Mutegi brings to Utumishi Girls a wealth of experience in school leadership and academic excellence. She has served as the principal of Langalanga Mixed Senior School since before the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, during which she led the school to notable academic improvement.

Under her leadership, the institution transitioned into its current status as a public senior school under Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). She also oversaw the school's transformation into a C4 Public Senior School, expanding its capacity to accommodate more than 1,260-day scholars.

Additionally, Mutegi steered the former sub-county day school to academic success, consistently producing top-performing KCSE candidates, including straight A (84 points) and A- students. Among the school's notable achievers during her tenure were Isaac Mugambi in 2022 and Laura Ayuma in 2024.
