The Kenya Wildlife Services has warned the public against lighting of fires in near the parks during the dry season which may be blown into the park.

In statement to the public the Service noted that lighting fires during this dry season risks causing fire into the dry vegetation that will be spread rapidly due to strong winds.

The KWS released the statement Saturday after a fire incident occurred at the lake Nakuru National park on Friday night.

“The fire originated from Lake View Estate, spread into Lake Nakuru National Park, affecting the Honeymoon Hill area,” read the statement in part.

The Kenya Wildlife Service, through support from the community, the Nakuru County Fire team and Bondeni Police station, they were able to contain the fire by 10 pm.

The KWS cautioned that “Such fires spread rapidly, posing a serious risk to human life, wildlife, property and environment. Additionally, they reduce grazing areas and heighten human- wildlife conflict,”

However, the service confirmed that no injuries and fatalities were recorded.

On January 21, another wildfire broke out at the Mount Longonot National Park.

According to the KWS they wildfire originated from the community land and was suspected to be linked to land clearing activities.

“The fire spread into parts of the park but was swiftly contained,” said KWS.
