Intern doctor suspected of killing businesswoman detained for 14 days
An intern doctor who was arrested in connection with the murder of Naivasha businesswoman Susan Wanjiru Karuku will remain in police custody for 14 days to allow police conclude investigations
Antony Muchiri is accused of killing Karuku, who was said to be his lover, on the night of December 26 in Kabati area, Naivasha at a house she had previously rented to him
Appearing before court Tuesday the police sought more time to continue holding him in order to complete their investigations into the case.
through a miscellaneous application filed before court investigating officer Duncan Owang told said detectives required at least 14 more days to finalize investigations.
He explained that the remaining steps include conducting a mental assessment of the suspect as well as recording statements from additional witnesses.
“We are seeking the court’s indulgence to grant us 14 days to complete investigations, including a psychiatric evaluation of the suspect and the recording of more witness statements,” Owang told the court.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate noted the seriousness of the offence, stating that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of a High Court judge.
He further explained that substantive proceedings would resume once judges return from the December judicial recess after January 21.
“The offence before this court is serious and falls within the mandate of the High Court. The matter will be mentioned once judges resume duty after the court recess,” the magistrate stated.
Consequently, the magistrate ordered that Muchiri be remanded in custody at Naivasha Police Station until January 14, when the case will be mentioned for further directions.
Muchiri was arrested after he surrendered himself to authorities after allegedly killing the mother of two at Kabati Estate, following a night of festive celebrations
