The Nakuru County Department of Health has outlined a week of activities to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aimed at promoting early detection and increasing public understanding of the disease.

The events launched at the Nakuru Regional Cancer Centre at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital (PGH) on October 21 were in support of and awareness for breast cancer.

The week’s programme features daily themes running from October 22 to October 25, each focusing on a key aspect of awareness and prevention.

October 22 – Myths vs Facts about Breast Cancer:

The day was dedicated to correcting misinformation surrounding the disease, including common myths that discourage women from seeking screening or treatment.

October 23 – Survivors’ Voices:

Cancer survivors shared their experiences to inspire hope and highlight the importance of early diagnosis and emotional support throughout treatment and recovery.

October 24 – The Power of Screening:

Health workers will be conducting screening sessions and educational talks to emphasize how timely screening can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

October 25 – Self-Examination Day:

The week will conclude with demonstrations on proper self-examination techniques and the distribution of educational materials across health facilities and communities.

The department says the activities are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cancer prevention, screening, and awareness across Nakuru.

The initiative also seeks to encourage more residents to take advantage of free or subsidized screening services offered in public hospitals during the month.
