Residents of Ngata remain shocked by the strange acts of a grandson who almost took his grandmother’s life after stealing Ksh 2,000 from her.
“It was about 10 am when I wanted to get some supplies from the shop that I noticed my metal box had been broken into. I quickly checked my bag which was in the box only to find the Ksh 2,000 I had was missing,” says Ms Lydia Chepng'etich.
Ms Chepng'etich narrates that when she asked her grandson, Joe Akunda about the missing cash, the young man became agitated and that was when the drama ensued.
As if borrowing from a kidnapping scene in a movie, the 23-year-old jumped on her from the back held her in a chokehold and pulled her towards the bedroom. He then proceeded to chain her feet, tie her hands from the back and cover her mouth with a piece of cloth.
“He brought a knife and placed it on the cupboard next to my bed. This made me scared for my life,” she adds.

Before leaving, Akunda put on loud music and locked up the room she was in.
For about six hours, Ms Chepng'etich tried freeing herself to no avail.
At one point, Akunda brought her three bananas and insisted that she takes them. Ms Chepng'etich only took one as the sugar in the bananas could spike her blood sugar levels that she has been managing for years now.
After much struggle, the 63-year-old granny managed to free herself around 4 pm and immediately hopped towards the window, calling out to her neighbors for help.
Luckily, her neighbor’s kids who were coming from school heard her and notified their parents who came to her rescue.
“My son notified me that Ms Chepng'etich was calling out for help and that’s when I rushed there through the fence because the gate was locked. I peeped through the window and saw her legs were chained,” said Gladys Mokaya.
