An online fund drive has been established towards raising funds for the release of three individuals who were arrested over the June 25th protests in Gilgil.
Speaking to Jenny Zawadi (Toto Chizi) a Nakuru resident who is the organizer of the fund drive, she says they are aiming to raise the bail money that will see their friends set free and come back home.
“So far, we’ve raised Sh. 62,000, which we plan to use to help secure the release of our friends. One of them, Lucy Macharia, has a 7-month-old baby who is struggling without her. That’s why we came together to raise funds not just for Lucy, but also for the other two.”
The fund drive has taken social media by storm as influencers and social media users at large are using their platforms to help in raising funds for the release of the three.
Samuel Kambo, Carolyne Muranguri and Lucy Macharia were arraigned at Kahawa Law courts on July 10 and charged with commission of a terrorist act, arson and malicious damage to property.
According to court documents seen by Mtaa Wangu the three are said to have committed the offences during the June 25th protests.
"On 25th day of June at around 1500hrs you and others not before this court, rased Gilgil CDF offices whereby you torched motor vehicle registration number GKB 430H the property of the republic of Kenya" read part of the court documents.
They were each granted a bond of sh. 1 million. The first accused (Samuel Kambo) and the third accused (Lucy Macharia) were given an alternative cash bail of sh. 200,000.
Speaking to the advocate representing the accused, Murigi Kamande, he says that the reason Carolyne Muranguri was not given a cash bail was because the probation report was not favorable to her.
“My clients are still in custody at the moment,” he confirms.
The matter will be mentioned on 25th July,2025.
