Five suspects linked to the murder of 64-year-old Ambrose Omondi, a retired employee of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, in Mwariki Estate will remain in custody for 14 days to allow police conclude investigations.

The court in Nakuru, Monday allowed the police application which they sought to continue detaining the suspects for moore time to finalize their investigations.

Nakuru County Police Commander Samuel Boit who spoke to Mtaa Wangu said the suspects were apprehended on Saturday and presented in court on Monday.

The Police filed a miscellaneous application seeking to hold the suspects for 14 days to conclude investigations into the incident.

“We made a miscellaneous application before court, seeking for 14 more days to allow us conduct investigations. Our request was granted.” he notes

Omondi’s killing sparked outrage and renewed fears over rising insecurity in the estate that has remained calm for years.

The murder, which occurred just metres from Mwariki Police Station, has shaken residents, who say crime in the area has been escalating in recent months.

Omondi’s widow, Rosemary Omondi, recounted the painful last moments before her husband’s death. He had left home early Sunday morning at around 5 am, promising to call later, a call that never came. Hours later, she received news of a killing in the area, only to learn at the police station that the victim was her husband.

She describes a devastating scene, saying her husband had been stabbed in the back and head, with attackers also stealing his personal documents. Omondi, a father of three, had recently retired and was well known in the community.

In a previous interview with Mtaa Wangu, residents insisted Omondi's killing is not an isolated case. Zach Mwaura, a local trader, says he narrowly escaped an attack by suspected criminals two weeks earlier after witnessing them assault another elderly man.

Community leaders have criticized the response by security agencies.

Brian Momanyi noted that despite holding barazas with police, little has changed. He claims some suspects are known within the community but are frequently released after arrest.

Residents have continued demanding immediate and visible action, including enhanced street lighting, more frequent patrols, and firm action against repeat offenders. Some have threatened daily demonstrations if security is not restored.

“We are asking the government to intervene because today it is Omondi, tomorrow it could be anyone,” Rosemary says, echoing the fears of a community now living on edge.
