Student leaders at Egerton University have termed the move to discontinue eight courses as premature.

According to the chairman of the students’ council Dennis Odero, the university should have attempted other alternatives before resorting to scrapping the programmes.

According to him, the university ought to have taken more time to market the courses before arriving at the decision.

"This issue was raised during our meeting with the Senate and we gave our input over the same. I feel that that it will be even more expensive to discontinue the courses only to incur more cost when trying to reintroduce them in future," said Mr Odero.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution Prof Isaac Kibwage said the eight courses have not been attracting students.

“The staff in the department will be among those who will be targeted in the planned redundancy process,” Prof Kibwage said during a press briefing at the University on Tuesday.

The affected programmes include Bachelor of industrial technology, Bachelor of technology in civil engineering, Bachelor of Sc in soil, Environment and Land Use Management, BSc in Dairy Technology and Management, BSc in Wildlife Management and Enterprise, BSc in Integrated Forest Resource Management, BSc in Dairy Land Resources Management and BSc in Applied Aquatic Science.
