One teacher at Kenana Primary School has been found culpable for humiliating two sisters in grade 4 and 6 on September 16, for not wearing underwear.
This was confirmed by Victoria Mulili, the Nakuru County Director of Education, who told Mtaa Wangu that after carrying out investigations for the better part of a month, their investigations led them to one specific teacher.
“There were other teachers who were also involved in the incident as well, but we were able to narrow down to one teacher as being the one who was responsible,” she says.
The Director says that the matter is now under the Teachers Service Commission, for disciplinary action.
However, when mtaa Wangu reached out to Geoffrey Chemos, the Nakuru County Director of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), he says he is yet to receive the official report from the Ministry of Education with regards to the incident, adding that once they do, they will take appropriate action.
The incident evoked a lot of public outcry from different stakeholders involved, with most people asking for justice for the two children.
The two girls gave horrific details of how their teacher humiliated them for not wearing undergarments.
Mary, one of the victims, told us how her teacher asked her, “Kwenu mumenunuliwa panti? Mama yako huvaa panti?” As she narrated this ordeal to us, she broke down in tears and told us how the other teachers started laughing at her.
A month down the line, the students are back at school.
According to Pilot Khaemba, the Nakuru County Coordinator at the Children Department, the children and parents have been undergoing rigorous psychosocial support.
“The children were offered counselling sessions that helped them come to terms with what had happened. We were also able to link them with an organization that offered them financial support. I also understand that the area Member of Parliament was able to assist the family,” he says.
He concludes by saying that they will be conducting regular check-ups on the children to ensure they are faring on well.
