The prime suspect in the brutal murder of 30-year-old security guard Jackline Awuor will have to undergo mental assessment to confirm his fitness to stand trial.
The court in Nakuru granted the police 14 days to detain the suspect Evans Abuti, 35 as they finalise their investigations including subjecting him to psychiatric test before he can plead to the charges.
Nakuru North Sub-County Police Commander Charity Karimi said police are still going on with investigations and will need the days tighten the nose on the evidence.
“The court granted detectives 14 days to complete investigations and compile evidence,” Karimi notes.
Karimi further notes as part of the investigations, detectives recovered a jacket believed to belong to the deceased, which had visible blood stains.
“The exhibit is set to undergo DNA analysis at the Government Chemist to determine whether the blood matches that of the victim,” she notes.
A post-mortem examination has since revealed chilling details about the killing.
According to Jackline's eldest sister, Ann Atieno, they conducted the postmortem on April 7 which established that the accused person had gorged out one eye from the deceased's head.
“The autopsy showed the head had been struck with a blunt object, resulting in multiple fractures, pointing to the extreme violence inflicted on my sister. We will be resting our sister to rest today in Siaya, a death that is heavy to our hearts and her three-year-old daughter,” Atieno somberly notes.
Meanwhile, Karimi has dispelled fears over the safety of the victim’s young daughter, confirming that she is currently under the care of the deceased sister Bahati.
The deceased, Jackline Awuor, was a security guard attached to Protective Custody Security Ltd, and was reported missing after failing to show up for work, prompting a search that led to the discovery of her mutilated body quarry in bushes in Maili Kumi area.
She had been beheaded, with the head initially missing, and later on recovered after the suspect led the police to the second scene, before taking them to another where he was dumped the murder weapon.
