County to dispose off 44 unclaimed bodies in 21 days

Nakuru County Public Mortuary (Annex).
The county government has issued a 21-day notice to dispose off unclaimed bodies at the Nakuru Level 5 hospital and the Nakuru County Annex Public Mortuary (Kwa jack).
Both institutions report unclaimed adult bodies at the main mortuary, which have been unclaimed for over three months, leading to congestion and decomposition.
In two letters to the County Commissioner dated April 10 and 11, both institutions state that the department has exhausted all the available mechanisms to trace their kin without success and requests help.
“I wish, therefore, to request your office to assist in tracing their kin for them to collect the bodies, and if not traced, the disposal will be done after the 21-day expiry date,” reads part of the statements.
Through a list seen by Mtaa Wangu on the county’s official Facebook page, from the level five hospital (main mortuary) two individuals were tagged as unknown. The rest include 14 men and six women, despite a repeat of names.
In the other list, nine adults can be counted, and 13 infants.
The list also includes the dates they were admitted to the morgue and the area in which they were found, with some dating as far back as July 2024 and the latest being February 2025.
Families are advised to contact Nakuru PGH and Annex morgues directly for more information or to inquire about the identification process.
