The Nakuru County government will pay the hospital bills of all victims of the Mai Mahiu tragedy that left at least 46 dead and more than 110 injured in various hospitals, Governor Susan Kihika has said.

Speaking during her visit to the scene of the incident, the Governor expressed her condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones in the tragedy that happened in the wee hours of Monday morning.

"I cannot imagine what you have been through since this morning. At this time I know that as families you are devastated and worried about where to go next, let alone how to pay for your loved ones' hospital bills. As a government, we will pick up the hospital bill and ensure that all those affected today receive the best care," said Ms Kihika.

She also encouraged affected families to register at Ngeya Secondary School where the county, through the Kenya Red Cross, has set up a desk for residents to register so that assistance can be channeled to each family.

In addition, the county government will carry out a spot check across the county to identify dams that could pose a threat to people's lives and begin draining them to avert such natural disasters.

Speaking on the matter, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua advised motorists on the road not to force their way through flooded areas, which has led to an increase in the number of deaths from floods, saying it could be managed if people heeded government directives.

"Don't defy nature. If you find a place flooded, do not try to force your way through the raging water with your vehicles and motorbikes. Please also pay close attention to the government's advice on flooded areas and how to navigate through the difficult times," Mr Gachagua said.

He also applauded all the people who came to Mai Mahiu for the search and rescue operation.
