Visionary, hardworking and jovial are just some of the attributes used to describe the late Dr Laban Kiptoo during his memorial service held at Nakuru Level Five Hospital compound.

A sombre mood hung like a dark cloud over the crowd, with tears flowing freely as people shared their fondest memories of their friend.

"I have lost a brother and a friend with the sudden death of Dr Laban. He was a jovial, visionary man and very hardworking, even starting his internship before us, his classmates," said Dr Steven Obiero, a friend of the deceased.

The memorial service was attended by CECM Health Roselyn Mungai, PGH Medical Superintendent Dr James Waweru, family members, a representative of the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), PGH colleagues, Egerton students and medical staff from the hospital.

From the service it was clear that Dr Laban had touched many lives. This was evident from the various speeches that were made, all speaking with one voice in the hope that justice would prevail.

The medical student was found dead outside Nakuru Level Five Hospital on January 13. His death aroused mixed emotions and questions about how his body was found a few metres from where he worked.

So far in the investigation, CCTV footage from a nightclub showing what are believed to be Dr Kiptoo's last movements indicates that he had visited the club in London Estate before returning to the hospital.

Preliminary investigations also suggest that he returned to the hospital that night by motorbike, with driver Dominic Yegon saying he dropped him off at the facility before leaving after being paid.

He will be buried at his family home in Kitale on January 27.
