Chaos erupt in Nakuru city centre following rare protest by street children

Police officers patrol around Mashambani stage after chaos erupted in Nakuru city centre on June 4, 2025.
Chaos erupted in Nakuru City on Tuesday morning after street children took to the streets in protest of alleged mistreatemnet by matatu operators at various bus terminals.
The situation quickly escalated and became more chaotic as the children started hurling stones at vehicles and smashing their windows.
When police officers arrived at the scene, running battles ensued as the protesters turned the stones to the law enforcers.
According to a source who requested anonymity, there have been ongoing cases of insecurity at Mashambani stage, with clients being robbed of their phones.
"A street child yesterday pointed a knife at someone at the stage and tried to steal a phone. That’s when security personnel, who monitor different sections of the stage, intervened and beat the child," the source explains.
"Fast forward to this morning, street children took to the streets to avenge their fellow, and that’s when the chaos erupted."
A spot check by Mtaa Wangu at 2pm revealed that the busy Mashambani and, Shabab stages remained clear of vehicles and the Mburu Gichua road also remained clear.
Most of the cars did not get into the city centre and would escape the chaos through the main highway and head towards KFA or turn back and leave town.
Motorbike operators ripped off heavily as those who could not run away in time hopped on them and used them as their getaway plan with hiked prices in that moment.
For instance, from the Cigma round about to Tower One, I had to part with Sh 100 while on a normal day this would cost Sh 50.
According to Nakuru Sub-County police Commander, Samson Adanje, the police are currently investigating the chaos.
"We are still investigating what happened. All we know is that the street children took to the streets and started throwing stones at pedestrians. Fortunately, no one was harmed in the incident," he notes.
He notes that police have been able to bring the town back to normalcy.
