A night of unrest was witnessed on Monday night at Egerton University after a female student was stabbed by unknown assailants.

Speaking to a student who spoke on condition of anonymity in fear of being victimised, he says that the incident occurred at around 8pm near the Tatton hostels, which are within campus grounds.

“The woman in question sustained injuries to her head, chest, and face. She was immediately rushed to hospital,” he says.

The student notes that the place where the incident occurred has been notorious for attacks.

“In that specific area, we have had other cases of insecurity that have been reported time and time again. After the incident, students felt insecure, leading to demonstrations,” he says.

The issue of insecurity at the campus has been a thorn in the flesh of many students at the university. The attack on the female student is just the latest in a series of crimes witnessed in the campus.

The second-year student paints a picture of fear, narrating how, when darkness falls, they become prey to armed gangs on the university premises.

“We have reported several cases of students being attacked within the university but no action has been forth coming,” he says.

As the scuffle ensued, the students made their way to the main entrance at the main gate, where the business owners in that area suffered the wrath of the protestors.

They managed to break into a nearby food store and loot the establishment.

Property worth hundreds of thousands of shillings was set ablaze and vandalized by the angry students.

At the main entrance, Mtaa Wangu saw remnants of what was a fridge that was burnt to ashes and other school equipment such as desks that had been destroyed.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kibwage, says that the students are to blame for the damage.

“The goons near the gate joined forces with the students to loot and destroy university property,” he says.

After extensive meetings that were held between the different stakeholders in the university on Tuesday, an inside source revealed to us that the exams which the students were undertaking would go on as normal from today.

The Njoro Sub County Police Commander, David Apima, says that investigations are underway.
