With the anti-tax protests still going on in the country, Nakuru residents remained anxious expecting protesters to turn up in the streets as they had before.

However, for the better part of the morning, the city centre remained calm with police stationing their patrol vehicles on different streets in town keeping watch.

Although businesses run as usual, the tension in the air was obvious.

Less cars were parked in the streets and any sound of commotion prompted people to shut the doors to their business.

Things would however take a drastic turn a few minutes past 1 pm after a handful of protesters passed by Kenyatta Avenue close to Huduma center chanting ‘Ruto must go’.

Promptly, police officers stationed along Moi Road followed them as other patrol vehicles followed suit.

Attempts by the authorities to disperse the small crowd agitated the group. Consequently, the police were forced to launch tear gas and open fire, pushing the protestors down towards Taidys hotel as others fled towards bargain street.

For the next few minutes, the town was wowed by the loud sound of teargas canisters being launched and rubber bullets shot in the air.

At that moment, Kenyatta Avenue seemed like a dead town with most shops closing down as the cat and mouse game continued between the police and protesters.
