As the year draws to a close, skaters from various schools and clubs converged at Roots Academy to see the year off in style.

What better way to do so, than having a final showdown of the year that saw the best of the best go toe to toe in a very intriguing speed skating contest.

The different age groups that raced in the event did not disappoint as everyone brought their A game.

At this end of year tournament, the Sprint Skating Club ended up emerging as overall victors of the entire tournament.

Speaking to Vincent Muli, Coach and Director Sprint Club Kenya says he is very thrilled and proud of what they have achieved as a team.

“Our goal is to expose children to skating and bring them from starter to pro mode. Such competitions go a long way in helping us realize this goal. I could say we are now hungry for more. Competing with skaters in Kenya is fair enough but we would like to test ourselves at the international stage among some of the best teams. That is our target at the moment,” he says.

Speaking to Coach Brian Matia, Founder of Skate Squad Rollers and organizer of the event, he says that the main objective of the end of year competitions was to gauge the growth of the young skaters as they also showcase their talents.

“Coming into this year, we had the expectations of recruiting as many children as possible into the sport. From the high number of attendees and competitors we have had in the tournament, it is evident that indeed we have been able to expand the sport,” he says.

Matia adds, “We have also noted a drastic improvement in skills displayed by the players. Previously, especially while racing, most of the children would fall many times but this time, we had less incidences, an indication that the children have put in effort towards training.”

He concludes by saying that he hopes next year will be bigger and much better.

In the tournament Sprint Skating Club emerged victors, followed by Crater Academy and in third position was St. Georges Academy out of a total of 11 teams.
