Oilers win against Nondies 53-5, ready to face Kabras

Oilers registered an easy 53-5 win against Nondies in a satisfying match that will now see them face Kabras.

The match which Kicked off at 3 pm at the refinery’s ground saw Oilers take an early lead by half time where they had a 31-5 advantage over their nemesis.

Denis Abukuse from Oilers made an opening try for his team and a conversion by Geoffrey Ominde set the points at 7-0.

Though the game had a slow start, the Oilers saw an opportunity to harmer their opponents, as they put in one try after another.

By halftime, Davis Otundo, Tyson Maina, Steve Ochieng’ and Andrew Odero had secured tries for the Oilers team while Geoffrey Ominde had three successful conversions under his boot.

In an attempt to redeem Nondies, Ian Mumbwani made an intercept to Ominde’s pass and made a nice run across the pitch to register the first point for his team. However, their conversion went wide which set the points at 31-5.

In the second half, Nondies came in determined to narrow the gap. However, Oilers did not give them an easy time.

Oilers own Ominde, added the first point after the break through a penalty to make the points 34-5.

Through the boots of Sheldon Wanjala, Austin Sikutwa, and Davis Nyaundi the Oilers carded extra tries and two conversions from Denis Abukuse to solidify their glorious win at 53-5.

Speaking after the match, Oilers head coach Gibson Weru noted that Nondies was a worthy opponent and that it was a satisfying win against them.

“The team was a bit rusty as we started off, however, the guys picked up the gear and we ended up playing very well. What’s next for us is to regroup, review and recover then face Kabras RFC at the semi-finals in Kakamega,” he said.

On the other hand, Nondies coach Moses Wanyaga commended the Oilers for their amazing work with the pitch and noted there was beautiful rugby weather.

“Playing against the third-best team in the country was a big step up for the boys.  They really put in the effort,” said Wanyaga.
