Afraha Stadium came alive this weekend as it hosted the national trials for the Africa Under-18 and Under-20 Athletics Championships, marking a major milestone for the newly refurbished facility.

Over the course of two action-packed days, the country's top young athletes competed for the opportunity to represent Kenya at the continental championships, which are scheduled to take place from 16–20 July in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Under the blazing mid-morning sun, the track reverberated with determination. Spikes tore into the bright blue tartan as athletes gave their all in events such as the 5,000 metres, 800 metres, hurdles and steeplechase.

From the sidelines, coaches shouted last-minute tips and encouragement. Though the crowd was small, they were vocal, clapping, cheering and urging their favourites towards the finish line.

The intensity of each race built, culminating in dramatic final laps that had spectators on the edge of their seats. As the runners sprinted towards the finish line, the stadium erupted in cheers, then fell quiet as the results were announced. For many athletes, this was their moment of glory, while for others it was a stepping stone to future races.

The trials served as a crucial platform for emerging athletes, with many making their debut on a national stage. Despite the pressure, they delivered compelling performances that caught the attention of Athletics Kenya selectors.

According to officials, 45 athletes will be selected for Team Kenya — 18 in the Under-18 category and 27 in the Under-20 category — based on this weekend's performances.
